OSGP Alliance Becomes CEN-CENELEC LIAISON
17 Nov 2022

CEN-CENELEC/JTC-13 Approved the OSGP Alliance as an official Liaison for their Technical Bodies in the development of standards or other technical deliverables.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 17 November 2022: The OSGP Alliance, a global non-profit association dedicated to promoting the adoption of the Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP) and infrastructure for smart grid applications towards a future proof modern smart grid, is pleased to announce that the CEN-CENELEC/JTC 13 recently approved the Liaison participation of the OSGP Alliance.

The approval enables the OSGP Alliance to support the CEN-CENELEC Technical Bodies work associated with the development of standards or other technical deliverables. This includes their efforts related to Cybersecurity and Data Protection. The OSGP Alliance was selected because of its recognized expertise in areas of Smart Grid, Smart Metering, Cybersecurity, and Data Protection.

The OSGP Alliance developed and maintains a set of standards for Smart Grid and Smart Metering applications, and members of the OSGP Alliance have been working with TC13 for many years as part of developing the standards. This OSGP family of standards is published through various standard organizations, including ETSI and IEC, as well as CEN/CENELEC.

“We appreciate CEN-CENELEC’s desire to include the OSGP Alliance in their continued work associated with developing standards”, said Mark Ossel, OSGP Alliance Board Member. “As we represent a large user group of DSOs and suppliers, we believe it is in everyone’s best interests for the OSGP Alliance and CEN-CENELEC to align activities.”

“The OSGP Alliance has been working on security and data protection issues for many years”, said Larry Colton, Chairman of the OSGP Standards Committee. “This Liaison relationship will allow the OSGP Alliance to leverage its technical expertise, and assist CEN-CENELEC with the development of security related technical deliverables for the Smart Grid and Smart Metering markets.”

About The Open Smart Grid Protocol

The Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP) is a family of specifications published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) used in conjunction with the ISO/IEC 14908 control networking standard for smart grid applications. OSGP is optimized to provide reliable and efficient delivery of command and control information for smart meters, direct load control modules, solar panels, gateways, and other smart grid devices. With over 5 million OSGP based smart meters and smart grid devices deployed worldwide it is one of the most widely used smart meter and smart grid device networking standards. The OSGP set of public standards includes ETSI TS 104 001, CENELEC CLC/TS 50586, and IEC 62056-8-8.
